We live in a time in which our daily lives are pervaded by intelligent devices that are cross-linked in a wireless, ubiquitous way, that exchange data, and that so enable completely new services. At the Institute for Intelligent Cooperating Systems of the Faculty of Computer Science, we take up this hot topic and focus on highly topical scientific issues. These comprise on the one hand methods of artificial intelligence, ranging from intelligent data analysis, knowledge representation, spatio-temporal reasoning to conceptual and algorithmic approaches of swarm intelligence - on the other ahnd methods of model-driven development and specification as well as questions of safety and reliability. The institute is currently being established and from 2016 on, it will merge the two former Institute for Distributed Systems (IVS) and Institute for Knowledge and Language Processing (IWS) of the Faculty.

In this sense:

Welcome to the pages of the Institute for Intelligent Cooperating Systems (ICS).

Artificial Intelligence Lab

Prof. Dr. Sebastian Stober

The Artificial Intelligence Lab is dedicated to improving the cognitive abilities of machines and reducing the friction in human-computer interaction. We develop novel signal processing and deep learning algorithms for the analysis of sensory data and investigate new approaches for interacting with machines such as through EEG or eye tracking.

Autonomous Multisensor Systems

Prof. Dr. Benjamin Noack

Our main area of research lies in distributed estimation approaches to multisensor data fusion, navigation, and tracking. We address these topics through rigorous mathematical theory and analysis, and we strive to make modern estimation and learning methods ready for broader application in autonomous driving, intelligent transportation, and industrial process automation.

Communication and Networked Systems

Prof. Dr. Mesut Güneş

The Chair Communication and Networked Systems
covers in research and teaching the fields of wired and wireless networks, communications systems, Future Internet, and the Internet of Things (IoT).
The design, prototype development, and performance evaluation of
communication systems are the focus of research.

Computational Intelligence

Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Sanaz Mostaghim

The major focus in research and teaching at the Chair of Computational Intelligence  is on Computational Intelligence, multi-objective optimization and decision making, Swarm Intelligence and Swarm Robotics.

Theoretical computer science

Prof. Dr. Till Mossakowski

Our research and teaching focuses on the development and application of formal and semantic (i.e. mathematically grounded) methods to the study, modeling and verification of complex systems in various fields of computer science, varying from constraint reasoning about space and time to software specification, ontologies and conceptual blending.

Networks and Distributed Systems

Prof. Dr. David Hausheer

The Chair Networks and Distributed Systems  is active in several networked and distributed systems research areas, including software-defined networking, network functions virtualization, overlay networks, as well as related security and economic aspects.

Software Engineering

Prof. Dr. Frank Ortmeier

Our research is interdisciplinary. Today, software is the key innovation driver for many technical systems. However, while software engineering methods made huge steps forward in pure IT domains, software development tools, methods and processes for software in technical applications did not change a lot in the last two decades. Closing this gap in software engineering efficiency is the goal of our research.

Parallel Computing and I/O

Prof. Dr. Michael Kuhn

The group Parallel Computing and I/O conducts research and development on parallel systems. We develop concepts for high-performance computing, storage and file systems, as well as for parallel programming. As part of our teaching activities, we cover these topics and more regarding the efficient use of modern computer systems.
